Sarah Ophelia Rose Barnes was the daughter of George Pinkney and Nancy Brent Rose, and the wife of Thomas Whitley Barnes. Ophelia married Tom on 28 February 1884 at the Rose family home in Grantham Township, Wayne County, North Carolina. She died 8 May 1936 at the home of her daughter, Bessie Pauline Barnes Coleman, in Rocky Mount, NC.

Here’s a photo of the beautiful Ophelia, taken at about the time her daughter, Bessie Pauline, married Thomas Coleman in 1910.

Her New Jersey grandchildren – Ernest, Tom, and Helen, had only met her a few times before coming down south for her funeral. They remembered also going to the family burial plot in Grantham Township after the final rites.

Her husband, Tom Barnes, had died in 1892 when he was only thirty years old of consumption, now called TB. She never remarried. The photo below shows their gravestone at the Rose family burial plot in Grantham Township.
